Dean Brody’s “Good Goodbye” Summer Song Review

Earlier today, Dean Brody released two new singles. One was released to Canadian country radio called “Good Goodbye”, and the other to streaming services called “Dose of Country”.

album cover of Dean Brody's Good GoodbyeWe’re at that time of the year where artists start to release their big Summer songs, all fighting for that coveted – Song of the Summer. “Good Goodbye” is Dean Brody’s contribution to the string of Summer hits being released.

“Good Goodbye” by Dean Brody is a single about taking advantage of every last minute of your vacation. The song takes place in Mexico on the last day of a vacation when you have checked out of your room, but still have a few hours to waste before your flight – so take advantage of the all inclusive bar, don’t think about work, and find a way to have a “Good Goodbye” with your vacay (AKA – drink your face off). Not sure about you, but a killer hangover sounds like an awful first day back at the office.

Everything about this single exudes Dean Brody’s typical style, with a couple summery/vacation soundscapes thrown in. The vocals and melody are really laid back, and features some very big sounds that pay homage to mariachi, and Caribbean styles of music. There’s no steel drums, but if you squint with your ears (is that a thing?) you can almost hear them.

There’s no doubt that this is a Summer song, and that it will do well at country radio. Hardcore Dean Brody fans are going to love “Good Goodbye”, that’s for sure, because it is a really great song! But we can’t help but feel like it’s a little familiar for Dean. The melody is incredibly reminiscent to his Summer single “Sand in my Soul” from his 2013 album Crop Circles. The intro and melody are almost identical.

His latest album Beautiful Freakshow pushed the envelope of Canadian country music, so it’s possible that we were just expecting something different. Something that continued to push the envelope of the genre.

That being said, we’re still going to enjoy this tune on the patio all Summer long. It’s a great song to add to your BBQ playlist. Take a listen to the song for yourself.

Lyrics to Dean Brody’s “Good Goodbye”

One more night in Tulum
we checked out of our room
to catch the red eye home tonight
now we’re stuck in the lobby with an open bar
7 hours until our flight

hey now

everybody calm down I think I know what we can do
Before a long goodbye like this there’s three steps to help us through

Step one
raise it up
Step two
tilt it Back
Step three
go on repeat
with steps 1, 2, 1, 2, 3

Just one more margarita
pretty senorita
cuz we gotta kill some time
Deep in Mexico getting lo-oh-co
With one hell of a good goodbye

We know leavin vacay is the hardest part
with that boss man waitin at work
but don’t think of that now
here’s a jello shot round
think it’s time we take off our shirts

I can think of worst places to waste some time
Stuck here in paradise with my friends for one more night

Step one
raise it up
step two
tilt it Back
step three
go on repeat
with steps 1, 2, 1, 2, 3

Just one more margarita
pretty senorita
cuz we gotta kill some time
Deep in Mexico getting lo-oh-co
With one hell of a good goodbye

Come on

Mariachi

Those homebound flights you can hear a pin drop
They’re somber as a church on Monday morn
But tonight that return flight gonna take a departure
Oh it is
When our party and I walks on board

Step one
raise it up
step two
tilt it Back
step three
come on repeat
with steps 1, 2,

Everybody here we go

Step one
raise it up
step two
tilt it Back
step three
go on repeat
with steps 1, 2, 1, 2, 3

Just one more margarita
pretty senorita
cuz we gotta kill some time
Deep in Mexico getting lo-oh-co
With one hell of a good goodbye

About the author

Front Porch

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
