Canadian country-rock artist Marshall Potts has released a new single called “Hearts in the Sky” off his sophomore album titled That’s How it Starts. This is an acoustic song that is filled with emotion and depth.
Through both the guitar, and the lyrics, it’s abundantly clear that “Hearts in the Sky” is a deeply personal song for Marshall. It’s a song that’s really easy to get lost in – even his voice has the allure of a dream as it comes through the speakers. Many of the songs off his album are more upbeat and have a country-rock vibe to them. It’s nice to hear a softer side that showcases Marshall as a Canadian singer-songwriter.

The music video for this single takes place on the coast of Spain. The camera follows Marshall through the streets of a Spanish town, then takes us right to the beach. It’s the perfect setting for this song, and helps elevate the song’s tone. This setting isn’t one we normally see in country-rock music video, so it led us to ponder why this setting?
It’s a Universe thing… My mum passed in 2013 — she succumbed to cancer like so many of us these days. When I was thinking of a destination for the video, I thought of where she would want to go. She always felt a connection to Spain, ironically for a woman raised in Salford, Manchester — or perhaps not really considering how life seems to work. I knew she would choose Spain.
I wanted an ethereal feel to the music video and in the early hours of the morning, while the locals and visitors slept, we shot the footage and returned later that evening at sunset to capture the sunset scenes. It’s about two souls crossing paths, a chance meeting where two become one. It’s about not searching for what we all crave most and in that empty space love finds it’s way…

Marshall Potts is a sing-songwriter from British Columbia. His latest album That’s How It Starts is the follow-up to his 2015 album Long Goodbyes. In between these two albums, he’s done a lot of growing! After decades of self described people pleasing and giving, Marshall found himself in the midst of a health crisis. These health issues left him physically and emotionally spent. From there he upended his life, setting off on a ‘trip inside’ — a spiritual journey toward healing and acceptance.
