Mike Denney from MDM Recordings talks about signing with a label

Are You Really Ready to Sign with a Record Label?

It’s the dream for many artists: landing that record deal. But what does ready actually mean?

In this episode of Mastered, host Jenna sits down with Mike Denney, founder of MDM Recordings, to dig into the realities of what it takes for an artist to get signed.

With over 35 years in the music business, from his early days at Sony Music to running one of Canada’s leading independent country labels, Mike brings a wealth of insight on how artists can set themselves up for success long before a deal is on the table.

Building a Strong Foundation as an Independent Artist

According to Mike, one of the biggest misconceptions artists have is that a label will build everything for them. In reality, labels look for artists who already have a solid foundation, like a clear artistic identity, an engaged fan base, and a proven work ethic.

He explains that record labels aren’t just investing in songs; they’re investing in people. Artists who know who they are, understand their audience, and show they’re committed to the grind are the ones who stand out.

Networking: The Unspoken Key to Success

Mike emphasizes that networking is everything in the music industry. Opportunities often come from being in the right room, talking to the right people, and following up.

Whether it’s connecting at festivals, attending conferences, or supporting other artists, genuine relationships can open doors that talent alone can’t. He also points out that persistence and professionalism are what separate those who make it from those who don’t.

The Changing Landscape for Independent Artists

The music industry looks a lot different today than it did when Mike started out.

Platforms like SiriusXM have created more visibility for independent artists, but they’ve also made the playing field more competitive.

While streaming and social media can make an artist seem “successful” overnight, Mike cautions that true career longevity still comes from putting in the work, touring, recording, and consistently connecting with fans.

What Labels Look for Today

So, what makes an artist “signable”? Mike says it comes down to three big things:

  • Authenticity – Knowing your sound, story, and vision.
  • Dedication – Showing a relentless drive to improve and perform.
  • Community – Building a loyal fan base and strong relationships within the industry.

Independent labels like MDM look for artists who have already put in the groundwork, people they can help develop, not create from scratch.

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
