A Great Single: “Wild Rose Country” By The North Sound

Country Duo The North Sound "Wild Rose Country"

It’s been a banner year so far for Saskatchewan’s country/roots duo The North Sound. Their single “Wild Rose Country” is proof of why they’ve been turning heads.

“Wild Rose Country” features harmonies that are so spot-on that it commands your full attention. The voices of Forrest Eaglespeaker and Nevada Freistadt blend so perfectly and sends chills down your spine.

The North Sound songwriter, singer and guitarist Forrest Eaglespeaker penned “Wild Rose Country” while his partner and harmony/background singer, Nevada Freistadt, was pregnant with their first child.

“I wrote this song as a letter to Nevada and Aspen to tell them that I want to be better, I want to do the right thing,” Forrest explains. “And if I don’t, it’s a choice I made, and I’ll need your help to get to a point where I can take care of you.”

When he wrote the song, he was living with addiction. But as fatherhood approached, he started to reflect on the influence of his own childhood. He made the choice to do whatever it took to become sober. Having lived in both Calgary and Saskatoon, he made the choice to leave the negative pull of one place for the other. To where he felt he could be the best version of himself in sobriety.

“’Wild Rose Country’ is about the hardship of living in a place and feeling like you need to leave,” Forrest Said. “But the reality is, you’re just running away from yourself. It has nothing to do with the place because you’re the problem.”
