Tyler Joe Miller has had quite the kick-off to his career. His first single, “Pillow Talkin’” soared to number one on the country charts. His follow-up single, “I Would Be Over Me Too” followed suit and went to number 1.

So, who is Tyler Joe Miller? I had an opportunity to connect with him and learn more about the Surrey, British Columbia native.

Tyler Joe Miller, known by close friends and family as “just TJ,” introduces himself as a carpenter and a painter by trade, with country music artist trailing the end of the list. He’s built his business and career owning a non-profit organization called The Climb Outreach Society, where communities in Central and South America are provided housing, emergency food funds and healthcare for newborn babies, drinking water sources and more. Currently, the organization is working in two communities in Guatemala.

So how did Miller get into writing country music and topping the Canadian country charts?

It started in church, where he was asked to learn to play the guitar, which led to singing, then recognition that he was actually good at it. While in Guatemala, a coworker overheard him playing guitar at night, asked if he performed professionally, and challenged him to put some music together.

After Kristin Carter, his friend and fellow Canadian country artist, shared a duet of their cover of Ed Sheeran and Beyonce’s “Perfect,” the track went viral, landing views from Bobby Wills and Mitch Merrett. By September of 2019, Miller had attended the CCMAs and signed a record deal with MDM.

While in a writing session for his current #1, “I Would Be Over Me Too“, co writer Kelly Archer floated the idea of another track she had written. This would become his first radio single, “Pillow Talkin’“, which climbed the charts in a matter of weeks, topping the #1 spot.

Sometimes I Don’t, but Sometimes I Do (SIDSID) was released in early November, and is Tyler Joe Miller’s introduction to listeners as an artist who can connect with his experiences and emotions to deliver an honest, but witty track.

So what has Tyler Joe Miller been doing to stay busy during the pandemic? Since he hasn’t been able to go on a radio tour or get on stage, he’s spent much of the pandemic working five or six days a week, eight hours a day, as a painter. He spends his off-work hours connecting virtually for song-writing with teams in Nashville, but he’s also spent a lot of time writing on his own again.

Going back to writing solo has shown him what he’s learned from the talented writers he’s been able to connect with, and see the growth from when he first started. It’s been a great year of learning and exploring himself as a writer.

2021 is on the horizon, and Miller has some exciting things to look forward to. For starters, he’s excited for his next single from the EP. He looks forward to any opportunity to perform live music. It’s something that has really been missing from 2020 for performers everywhere.

When you finally get the opportunity to attend a live show and are planning to catch Tyler Joe Miller, what you see on stage is exactly who he is. He doesn’t want to be separate from the performer he is on stage. He’s the same regardless of if he’s doing carpentry, writing music, or performing.

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
