Interview With Canadian Country Artist Michela Sheedy

Front Porch Music: Thanks so much for joining us on the Front Porch Michela! We’re so happy to have you. Why don’t you introduce yourself to our audience. Tell us a bit about yourself, where you’re from, how your musical journey started, etc.

Michela Sheedy: Thank you for having me! My name is Michela Sheedy and I am a country artist from Okotoks, Alberta. I was once told that if Lizzo and Stevie Nicks had a baby, you would wind up with me. I’ve also been compared to the absolute goddess, Alannah Myles, but I don’t believe I am worthy of such praise.

I always knew that I wanted to sing and create music as a career, even from a young age.

I started playing guitar at 12 and was singing ever since I could talk. Naturally, I became obsessed and now as an adult, I am passionate about my career and I have made it my mission to bring a new face and sound to the genre of country.

I am proud of being bold, outspoken and fearless and I like to hope that those attributes come through in my music.

Front Porch Music: Before we start talking about your new single “Lost”, we have to say … your voice is one of a kind and fills a void in the Canadian country landscape. We hear a lot of voices here at Front Porch Music, but yours really stood out to us. Now to your new single! “Lost” is a wonderful song. Tell us the story and the inspiration behind this song.

Michela Sheedy: Thank you so much. I sincerely appreciate that.

“Lost”, at first listen, may just seem like a love song. But to me, it was created out of a place of deep pain and uncertainty in my life. I was questioning a lot of my choices after being burned by something that I thought I was so sure of.

I went to Nashville to try and find some clarity and this song found me. After a writing/therapy session with songwriter and friend, Chris Yurchuck, this tune poured out of both of us so effortlessly.

It was during that session that I found my joy again.

What I love about this song is that it can mean so many different things to different people. It’s a song about finding joy in life again after hardship.

It’s a song that means a lot to me and I hope it can help give people hope.

Front Porch Music: What was the recording process like for “Lost”?

Michela Sheedy: I recorded “Lost” with my trusted and very talented producer, Mark Troyer at Evergreen Sound in Calgary.

This is the second song I have recorded with him and it was such an amazing experience. We took a couple risks when recording this song. We found that there is beginning to be a specific “sound” coming out of Calgary and we wanted to create something different.

He really respected my artistic vision for this song and keeping it true to its roots, the music and the lyrics. We didn’t add too many layers when it came to production because we really wanted the message and feeling of the song to shine through.

Front Porch Music: You’ve had the chance to play some of Canada’s most iconic stages, and shared stages with some huge artists. Is there a show that stands out to you as being memorable? What made it so memorable?

Michela Sheedy: One of my most memorable shows I’ve played in the last couple years has definitely been on the Nashville North tent at the Calgary Stampede … opening for Aaron Goodvin.

It was one of the first shows that I really felt like I came into my own on stage.

I felt like the audience was really feeling it and having a good time so it was this beautiful symbiotic relationship that made for good times all around. Plus, Aaron Goodvin is such a stellar performer and an even more amazing guy.

He really made me feel like one of the team and like I belonged.

Front Porch Music: Aaron’s a great guy for sure! Who do you consider your biggest influences? Where do you find your inspiration?

Michela Sheedy: I draw inspiration from so many diverse artists, it’s difficult to choose.

As a whole, I am so inspired by Chris Stapleton for his honesty and absolute mastery in songwriting. But recently, I have been very inspired by strong, badass women in the country industry like Tenille Townes, Lainey Wilson and Kassi Ashton.

Front Porch Music: Right now, we’re all stuck at home trying to do our part to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. Have you picked up any fun new hobbies during this time of social distancing?

Michela Sheedy: I thought that being stuck indoors would completely destroy my sense of normal.

But this time really proved how adaptable and resilient I can be as an artist. I have been very productive. Lots of songwriting, live streaming and working on my craft. I have also been playing a lot of shows! Small private events like birthday parties and graduation celebrations done at a safe social distance on people’s driveways.

Other than that, I have become an expert at the art of the bubble bath. So I have been very busy!

Front Porch Music: Oooh … a great skill to have learned! Thanks so much Michela, and congrats again on the release of your new single, we can’t wait to hear what’s next for you!

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
