Interview With Brian John Harwood

Front Porch Music: Thanks so much for joining us on the Front Porch Brian! We’re so happy to have you again! We spoke earlier this Summer at the release of your single “Hotter Than Summer”. Congrats on the success of that single! When you look back to the release of that single, what comes to mind?

Brian John Harwood: “Hotter Than Summer” presented a lot of surprises. We were shocked at how many Spotify streams it accrued in just a couple of months, and the messages/comments have been so incredibly positive and supportive that I don’t think I could have asked for a better release for that song.

It definitely makes me miss summer time.

Front Porch Music: Your latest single “All That I Was Missing” is really great! It’s catchy and tells a really great story. Tell us a bit about this song … what’s the story behind these lyrics?

Brian John Harwood: I wanted to write a song that captured the feeling that I get when I’m with my finance Elle.

From the moment we started writing it, I knew I wanted to propose in the music video. In the past, I was a bit wild, and the lyrics tell the story of how I’ve changed since meeting her.

She makes me a better man every day.

Front Porch Music: And what about the music video?

Brian John Harwood: The making of the video was a very unique experience.

Ultimately, we wanted to capture the excitement and energy that I feel for this relationship. All of it is leading up to the one shot where I get down on one knee and propose.

Front Porch Music: That’s so exciting! You can really tell that she was surprised … you captured the moment perfectly! What was going through your mind while this scene was being filmed? And what was the planning process like?

Brian John Harwood: All that was going through my head in that moment was “I hope she says yes”.

Initially, I asked her to play my love interest (she hadn’t heard the song yet), and dragged the process out for months. I didn’t want her to expect it in the slightest. When we reached the waterfall where I made the proposal, it was the one of the most amazing and spontaneous moments I’ve ever experienced.

Front Porch Music: This song was cowritten and produced by Dustin Bird. You two seem to collaborate on a number of projects. What makes you and Dustin such great creative partners?

Brian John Harwood: It’s hard to explain, but in writing as in all relationships, sometimes you just find someone who you click with.

I have written with a number of writers and worked with a lot of producers but Dustin and I just really work well together, and I think the fans are feeling the same way.

Front Porch Music: Absolutely! You two clearly work well together. What’s next for you? Obviously, there’s going to be a wedding coming up! But do you have more music coming out soon, what can we expect to see from you?

Brian John Harwood: I’m continuing to work on brand new music, with another release planned for December, but before that, my band Kansas Stone will be releasing a single in November, shining a light on mental health and suicide awareness.

All the while, I’ll be planning this wedding for the new year in Costa Rica (fingers crossed on that one).

Front Porch Music: Wow! Sounds like the rest of 2020 and 2021 are going to be years to remember! Thanks so much for joining us Brian. Congrats again on your engagement!

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
