Delta Sweet’s “Smooth Runnin'” Proves He Was Born to Tell Country Stories

Delta Sweet Smooth Runnin'

Some songs sound exactly like what they’re about. “Smooth Runnin'” is one of them.

Delta Sweet, the solo project of Patrick Kordyback (yes, that guy from Stereos), just dropped a new single that feels like the windows are already down before the first chorus hits. It’s upbeat, nostalgic, and rooted in the kind of real-life storytelling that makes country music worth paying attention to.

The Story Behind the Song

“Smooth Runnin'” was co-written by Kordyback and his friend Daniel Johnson, a vintage truck collector whose passion for old square body pickups turned into the heart of the song.

“One night Daniel was telling me about all the stories he has from buying and selling these trucks to different people all over North America,” Kordyback says. “Stories about where the trucks have been or where they’re going were so interesting to me and I knew we had to make it a song.”

That authenticity shows. The track isn’t just about trucks. It’s about the people attached to them, the roads they’ve traveled, and the kind of connections that form around shared love for old fixer-uppers. Country music does that better than any other genre, and Delta Sweet leans into it fully here.

A Country Artist Built for This

If you’re newer to the Delta Sweet project, here’s the quick backstory. Kordyback first made his name as frontman of multi-platinum Canadian pop-rock band Stereos, who broke through on MuchMusic’s DisBAND. The group racked up gold and platinum singles, JUNO nominations, and three SOCAN No. 1 Awards before becoming one of Canada’s most recognizable pop acts.

But country music was always in the background.

“Country radio was the soundtrack to every camping trip, lake weekend, bike ride, Slurpee, you name it,” he says. “I think the biggest influence this has had on the music I’ve released previously is the fact that I always wanted every song to tell a story. No genre of music can tell a story better than country.”

You can hear threads of that throughout the Stereos catalogue in songs like “Way Back Home” and “Wild Hearts.” With Delta Sweet, those threads are finally front and center.

If you’ve got a summer playlist that needs a truck song with actual heart behind it, you just found it.

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
