Jason Benoit Makes A Move With His New Folk-Country EP, “The Deadwood”

Newfoundland and Labrador country artist Jason Benoit

Country artist Jason Benoit is back with a brand new sound!

He has released his anticipated new EP, The Deadwood … a six-song collection that marks a shift towards a more organic country sound.

Following up on his critically acclaimed 2023 album Time Traveller, Jason trades in the pop-country influences for a blend of singer-songwriter and classic country with a generous helping of bluegrass sounds.

Fans can expect a stripped-down, rootsy sound filled with banjo, fiddle, mandolin, and organ, reminiscent of the golden age of country music.

Where The Deadwood‘s Inspiration Came From

The Deadwood is a deeply personal project for Benoit. “It feels a little more ‘organic’ country than ‘pop’ country,” says Benoit, “like my last album ‘Time Traveller,’ but with the use of Banjo, Fiddle, Mandolin, and organ in the more traditional sense.”

The EP features two re-imagined songs, “Chicago” and “25 to Life,” originally written in Benoit’s youth. “I would have never released them otherwise,” he admits, “but I was excited at the opportunity to bring a fresh new sound to these old songs.”

“Lonely in Love” draws inspiration from the contemporary folk scene with a touch of Dierks Bentley influence, while “Whiskey From A Stone” pays homage to the quintessential Canadiana sound of Blue Rodeo.

For a guaranteed good time, look no further than “Wine Me Up” … a foot-stomping, 90s country throwback inspired by Patty Loveless and the Brothers Osborne. This energetic track is sure to be a staple at Benoit’s upcoming live shows.

The Lead Single “1000 Mile Grin”

The EP’s lead single “1000 Mile Grin” is a perfectly wrapped package filled with the project’s themes.

The upbeat tune tells the story of chasing dreams while acknowledging the importance of cherishing loved ones. “Sometimes, that can become all you focus on hurting your relationships in the process,” Benoit explains. “This song is about realizing that being with her is where he needs to be and tells the story of driving back home and how excited he is do be back in her arms again.”

“1000 Mile Grin” serves as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices and rewards that come with pursuing ambitions. The track’s Americana influences, inspired by artists like Zach Bryan, Tyler Childers, and Sam Barber, seamlessly blend with Benoit’s signature country sound.

The Deadwood is a love letter to Benoit’s East Coast roots. This impressive collection of songs showcases Benoit’s musical evolution while staying true to who he is.
