Introducing Matt Martin: Canadian Country Artist

This past week, I had a chance to chat with up-and-coming Canadian country artist, Matt Martin. After hearing his current single “Passenger Seat” the first time, I couldn’t get it out of my head.

So who is Matt Martin? Well, the Front Porch is here to introduce you to this Canadian country musician.

Matt Martin grew up on a farm for the most part, just outside of Fergus Ontario. Growing up, the Martin family were singers in church. During that time, Matt was exposed to Christian-rock music. At the age of fourteen, Matt Martin traded in his baseball glove for a guitar and lessons … further fuelling his interest in songwriting.

Throughout high school, he played in a band, performing predominantly rock music.

It wasn’t until he moved to Kitchener in his early twenties that he took an interest in country music. The friends he’d made listened to country, so he became surrounded by it often. He spent this time starting a digital marketing agency. Which he currently heads alongside pursuing his music.

Martin recalls being at an event around the age of thirty … and at the end of the day everyone was to create one goal for themselves. After spending his twenties playing music at friends’ weddings … and diving into country music, he set a goal to write and record three country songs over the course of the next year.

From there, Martin began to pursue his career as a musician. After travelling to Europe for a backpacking trip, he was seated next to Blue Rodeo’s Glen Milchem and Bob Egan. After getting connected, his songwriting sessions, industry events, and recording sessions ensued.

Never Gets Old” was released in June 2019, along with “Vinyl and Whiskey“, and “Summer Nights“.

Passenger Seat is his latest, with its release just in time for summer on July sixth. “Passenger Seat” came from a writing session with Chris Buck. It was a beautiful day in Nashville … and they’d spent hours coming up with something. The writing duo began to play with some simple chords, and ended up with “Passenger Seat” within the hour.

Martin’s goal has been to remain authentic and always to come across genuine.

He grew up on a dairy farm, in a small town. Where he has the fondest memories of road trips throughout the years, and even drove a Jeep Wrangler for a while. His songs are stories inspired by experience and a familiar feeling … like driving with the top down on a summer night.

So what’s in store for Matt Martin for the rest of 2020? He’s working on an EP and hopes to release another track this year … if not the EP itself. He’s been listening to Matt Stell, Morgan Wallen, and Hardy- along with the new Taylor Swift album of course.

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
