Justine Blanchet has gifted us a new song that’s perfect for any sad songs playlist. If you need a song to scream along with while healing from a heartbreak, “What I Got” is for you!
The track is paired with a recently released music video that visually highlights the song’s emotional depth.
Written by Justine during the aftermath of a fractured relationship, “What I Got” arrives after she was named to the Elite 50 of CBC Music’s Searchlight 2024!
A Review of “What I Got”
“What I Got” showcases Justine’s strong vocals and emotional depth as she reflects on a broken relationship.
Her voice is both powerful and heartfelt, capturing the pain of unfulfilled promises and emotional hurt.
The lyrics are raw and honest, telling a story of love that faded despite “grand gestures” like flowers, which, in the end, “could never make up for the things you said.”
Two of my favourite lines are, “I hope she gets better than what I got – I hope she never has to meet the man that you let me see,” where Justine expresses empathy for her ex’s new girlfriend.
Even though she’s been hurt, she hopes the new girl doesn’t experience the same heartbreak she did. This shows a surprising and refreshing amount of compassion, despite her own pain and frustration.
Overall, “What I Got” is a moving song that combines Justine’s strong vocals with heartfelt lyrics about love and loss.
The mix of splashy keyboard sounds and modern country elements, like banjo, guitar, and drums, makes it ideal for singing in the car while processing your own heartbreak.

Visuals That Amplify the Heartbreak
The music video for “What I Got” pairs the song’s emotional lyrics with simple but powerful visuals.
The amount of symbolism in this music video makes me love it even more.
In a couple clips, Justine sings alongside fresh flowers while dead petals scatter the ground, symbolizing the relationship that has fallen apart.
One of the most memorable scenes features Justine singing to a reflection in the mirror.
The reflection, holding fresh flowers and looking happy, looks just like her at the beginning of their relationship but is symbolic of his new girlfriend.
As she sings, “I hope you can give her everything you promised you could give me,” it’s clear she doesn’t want the girl in the mirror to end up hurt like she did.
The music video enhances the song’s emotional impact, so be sure to watch it!
About “What I Got”
Written by Justine, “What I Got” is her first collaboration with Nashville producer Ryan Rossebo and her second single of 2024.
Justine explains, “This song was inspired by a challenging relationship that ended with a lot of heartbreak. As I wrote it, I caught myself thinking about how his next relationship would compare with ours, leading to a lot of inner conflict about the somber reality of what had happened between us and how I should feel about the future.”
With “What I Got,” Justine connects with those who have experienced heartbreak and showcases her talent as a rising artist and songwriter.
