Ontario-based artist Jesse Slack has released his newest single, “Who You’re Gonna Be”.

You might know Jesse from his appearance in the 2021 Boots & Hearts Emerging Artist Showcase, where he wowed the audience with his fresh sound. He’s back with a song unlike anything he’s done before.

The slow, ballad-style song is about his newborn son, Rebel James Slack. Rebel joined the world in December, and Jesse says on Instagram that “the minute I found out I was going to be a father my world had changed!”

Even the cover art is a reflection of Jesse’s anticipation of fatherhood. A simple title laid over an ultrasound image of Rebel before his birth hidden under a deep blue hue prepares Jesse’s listeners for the heartfelt single.

The track is a beautiful tribute to Rebel. In it, Jesse wonders what kind of person his son will grow into – whether he’ll get his mother’s smile, his father’s “stubborn streak”, if he’ll sing like his mom or pick up the guitar like his dad. No matter what, Jesse tells us that he’ll love his son no matter who he ends up being.

Jesse also sings about his feelings towards parenthood. Rebel is his first kid, and Jesse is clearly uncertain about his newfound role. Jesse admits that he’s “scared to death” that he won’t be enough for his son. The feelings of doubt that Jesse so masterfully portrays over a beautiful, slow country ballad really make this song special.

The song doesn’t yet have a music video, but you can stream the single anywhere you get your music.

You can follow Jesse Slack on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to keep up with new releases. He’s already promised that 2022 will be an “even bigger” year than the previous one.
