The Calgary based singer-songwriter tugs at our heartstrings in his newest track, a cover of “Second Chance” by 38 Special, accompanied by a stellar music video.
“Second Chance” is a song about loss and regret. Tommy’s character has to come to terms with the fact that, due to his own actions, he’s lost the love of his life. He’s now on his knees, begging to get her back.

The music video for the song, which stars Tommy alongside Abby Hoffman, cleverly jumps back and forth between the past and present. It uses handheld-looking camera shots for the past – clips of Tommy and his former partner on a road trip. The filter over the footage is very effective at making us feel nostalgic for times long gone.
The shots of the present are of Tommy singing and playing guitar in the back of his truck, filmed with perfect quality to further distance him from the relationship he so badly wants to return to. The landscapes of Pitt Meadows, BC, where the video was shot, provide a gorgeous backdrop for Tommy’s signature deep, crooning vocals.
At the end of the video, the sun has set as Tommy gets out of the front seat of his truck and walks towards a home, guitar in hand. Which leads the viewer to wonder- who’s home is this? His partner’s? Was Tommy ever actually singing in the back of his truck, or was that just a reflection of his inner thoughts?
We can’t be sure.
About Tommy Charles’ “Second Chance”
Tommy’s cover of “Second Chance” was the fourth of 4 singles leading up to his debut album, Southern Accent, which was released in October of this year. Tommy says that he “got a call from the CEO of my record label who loved the original 38 Special version.
I wasn’t aware the song existed, but then it started growing on me and thought: why not! Turned out to be a great decision, because now “Second Chance” feels like a song I’ve written and lived. It’s really my own thing, my own story. It’s an easy song to relate to, as we’ve all asked for forgiveness at some point.”
On his debut album, Tommy had this to say: “The record is a snapshot of these last couple of years, from my time in the US, to the pandemic, to my decision to move out West.
It’s a collection of songs that I hold dear, that I’ve been playing over and over. In a few years from now, I will listen to the album and I know it will take me straight back to those years in my 20s.”
You can find “Second Chance” and the rest of Tommy’s album on streaming now, and the track officially hits radio on January 1st, 2024.
