Alberta Brother Duo Flaysher Chat About Latest Single “Wild One”

Flaysher's new single "Wild One"

Flaysher is a CMAB Award-nominated Canadian brother duo with grit in their vocals and truths in their lyrics.

Since their debut country release in 2020, the brothers have gained support from SiriusXM and CBC Country, and were named the “Most Active Indie” artist (all genres) at Yangaroo/DMDS in July 16, 2021.

These blue-collar bros are known for their high-energy live performances. They’ve performed at the Calgary Stampede, headlined the Alberta Summer Games, and sold out the King Eddy.

The brothers are also currently competing as finalists in the Alberta Music Project WILD program.

Today I got the chance to interview them and chat about their latest single “Wild One.”

Whether you’re chasing the wild one or you are the wild one, this song speaks to everyone.

This is an extremely catchy tune that lives rent free in my head, and once you give it a listen, I’m sure it will be stuck in yours too. (But that’s definitely not a bad thing)

Check out below what Flaysher has to say about their latest hit single!

An Interview With Country Duo Flaysher

Thanks so much reaching out to chat with us on the Front Porch! We’re so glad that you’re taking the time to do this interview and talk about your latest single.

1. It would be great if you could introduce yourselves to our audience. Tell us who you are, and how music became a part of your life.

Of course, hello Front Porch Music! Stoked to be here with you all, I’m Brad Flaysher and I’m Ryan Flaysher. How we got started in music, I guess it always kinda starts with your parents to some extent.

Mom was super passionate about the stories behind the music, and Dad was always listening to very inspiring, upbeat music that was very motivating and from the heart.

We grew up listening to a lot of Bruce Springsteen, Bryan Adams, Bob Segar, and Meatloaf and just songs with a lot of passion in them. That started us down a road of playing cover shows in our early teens.

We played 200 shows by the time we hit our 20’s in rock and roll, and released an EP in the rock and roll genre and since then, we did transition over into country and now we write our songs in the country market and it feels like home for us here.

2. When did you decide to pursue music as a career and what made you decide this was what you wanted to do?

I think back when we were kids is when we really fell in love with music.

We played our first show and after that moment we kinda just looked at each other and went “I could really get used to this.”

I guess at that point we weren’t really thinking of it so much as a career because we were 13 and 14 at the time but we just wanted to take it as far as we could.

I don’t think there was a turning point in our minds to when it flipped but in 2018, we were artists in the CMI program in Toronto and that’s when we found more of a home in country and at that point, we decided we really wanted to take it to the next level.”

3. Alright let’s talk about your latest single “Wild One”. First of all, I love the song, it’s so catchy and after listening to it just once or twice it was on repeat in my head and I was singing along. Tell us about what the song means to you and what the recording process was like.

What draws us towards the song and what really speaks to us about it is this universal feeling of whether you’ve been the wild one that someone’s chasing after or whether you’re chasing after the wild one, everyone can relate.

It’s just a fun tune and we had a lot of fun with it. Recording with Dan was amazing. He’s just such a great guy all around and the ideas he had really helped take the song to the next level.

4. Did you guys have any part in writing the song?

This was the first song that we’ve ever released that we didn’t write, but the song did very much speak to us, it felt like ours very quickly and that’s why we cut it.

It just felt like something we wanted to say as artists.

5. Do you guys currently write any of your own music or are you hoping to in the future?

Yeah absolutely, we love to write. It’s a huge part of why we do what we do. We love to tell our own stories and feel like we have something to say artistically.

We write some just the two of us but we also do a lot of co-writing as well.

6. Growing up, who were your biggest influences other than the ones you previously mentioned? Were there any in Country music?

Yes, in the country side the way it kinda worked in the 90’s when we were growing up it was on the radio we would listen to Tim McGraw and Alan Jackson and those classic 90’s country acts but whenever we weren’t getting what we wanted on the radio at the time we’d ask Dad, push in the tape while we were sitting in the back of his grey GMC work truck, and he’d push in the tape and that’s when it would be Bruce Springsteen or Meatloaf or Bob Segar of course.

There were also some mix tapes with Air Supply, Michael Jackson, all sorts.

7. Currently who are some your biggest influences?

Right now, for me I would say Dierks Bentley is a huge one. Songwriting as well as style I’m a huge fan of him. As well as, Dallas Smith I would say as well with that rock to country crossover.

8. Who are you listening to right now? And what tracks do you have on repeat?

I listen to Thomas Rhett all the time. His Center Point Road record is a huge one to me, just personally it really helped me along my little life journey and that’s still a record I have in my truck in the CD player.

Also, some Morgan Wallen and some Hardy.

9. What do you guys like to do other than music? Any hobbies?

No. Hahaha.

Nah, we actually got new motor bikes a couple years ago so when the weather gets nice, we like to go for a ride. Personally, I’m into snowboarding a lot too.

We both love the mountains; I typically hike or like driving through them. Going to Banff and walking around the shops and going to the hot springs I like as well.

Sometimes we do some target practice out on the farm, it’s a good way to blow off some steam.

10. If you could open a show for any artist, who would it be? And why?

I would say probably Dierks Bentley.

He just has like an anthemic kind of vibe with him. I think he’s an easy-going dude but super professional at the same time, he strikes the balance of that really well. Stylistically he would be a ton of fun and he seems like the type of guy you could just sit down and have a beer with.

Speaking of the mountains and everything, when he was playing in 2019 at The Dome, it was the night before the show, my girlfriend and I were snowboarding out at Lake Louise and we were going up the gondola and he’s sitting across from us and I was like “wait, are you Dierks Bentley?” I can actually truly say he’s the type of guy you can sit and have a beer with, he was like “Where do you guys normally go around here? Who has the best beer?”

11. Do you guys have any Canadian country artists you listen to?

High Valley is another inspiration of ours, especially them starting as a brother duo and being Canadian, of course that resonated very quickly with us and helped inspire us.

Beyond that there’s the Hunter Brothers and Andrew Hyatt we’ve been listening to as well.

12. Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself or your new single?

Yeah! We’re super excited and proud and honoured to be in the top 12 of Project WILD which is quite the program here in Alberta.

3rd place gets $50,000 worth of funding, 2nd place gets $75,000 worth of funding, and 1st place gets $100,953 worth of funding, but the most important is just the learning process that we’ve been going through.

It’s essentially a development program and it started in September and its going until March so it’s been a lot of work but there’s been a lot of growth behind the scenes in the business as well as the music itself and we can’t wait to share even more exciting content and music with everyone that comes as a part of that.

On that note as well, we do have a lot of stuff coming up in the future as far as releases and stuff like that and if anyone would like to follow us on Spotify, they can stay up to date with all that.

Stay tuned, it’s gonna be a wild ride!
