Shawn Richard Shows Us The “Right Side of Wrong”!

Emerging country artist Shawn Richard is making the most out of all this social distancing… He has released a brand new single titled “Right Side of Wrong”.

“Right Side of Wrong” is the follow-up single to Shawn’s popular debut single “All My Tomorrow’s”. It’s a song about coming to a realization that the relationship you’re in may not be the right one. To find the strength to take control of your life and move on.

It’s a song filled with hope, self-love, and some spicy insults.

The lyric that sticks out: “It’s like a month of Mondays when I’m with you”

Ouch…

When we last spoke to Shawn, he mentioned that this would be Part II to his last single. “All My Tomorrow’s” was about successfully winning back the one that got away. Now, we learn in “Right Side of Wrong” that there was a reason they got away in the first place. The lesson in this case is that it’s better to leave what’s in the past in the past.

Much like his debut single, “Right Side of Wrong” is an incredibly catchy tune that has a chorus that will be stuck in your head for days. Shawn really has a way of writing music with a compelling hook, and lyrics that make you want to sing along.

We had the chance to connect with Shawn Richard to talk to him about this new single, life in quarantine, and representation in country music. It was a really great time and we hope you enjoy the conversation as much as we did!

Before we get to the interview below, be sure to stream “Right Side of Wrong” wherever you get your music.

Interview With Canadian Country Artist Shawn Richard

Front Porch Music: Shawn! Thanks so much for joining us on the Front Porch. Since this is your first time with us, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself?

Shawn Richard: Thank you so much for reaching out!

I am a Canadian Country Artist from Charlotte County, NB.  I come from a very large musical family, so music has and always will be a very integral part of who I am.  I decided to take my music career to the next level in 2019 after spending several of years performing in small bars, benefits, churches etc.  I flew to Nashville and recorded my very first single, and ever since – music has been my number one focus!

Front Porch Music: Your first single “All My Tomorrow’s” has really resonated with our audience. What is it about this song that you think people connected with so much – what’s the inspiration behind that single.

Shawn Richard: I was overwhelmed by the support of your audience with my first single.

Firstly, it is always exciting when a new artist puts out their first single, everyone wants to see what this person is all about; their style, brand, type of music, sound etc.  Secondly, “All My Tomorrow’s” is just such a feel-good song, people who are in happy relationships or new relationships can really relate to this.

Canadian country artist Shawn Richard Talks about new single "Right Side of Wrong"

Front Porch Music: Congratulations on the release of your new single “Right Side of Wrong”! It’s a fantastic new single that your fans are going to love. What was the recording process like for this song?

Shawn Richard: Thank you!

This song I chose to keep local, as NB has such great talent.  I recorded “Right Side of Wrong” at Pumpkin Patch Studio, in Memramcook, NB with brothers Danny & Mike Bourgeois, JP Comeau and Deb LaPointe. We got to spend the entire day in the studio brainstorming ideas and putting our whole heart and soul into this.  This song has such emotion that it was an easy process and the music kind of just naturally came to everyone, but they had some really great ideas for key changes and riffs that really made the song stand out, I was super impressed with their work!

Front Porch Music: With the world under quarantine right now, artists are turning to the Internet to perform and stay connect with their audiences. You had a digital release party for “Right Side of Wrong”. What was that like?! Was it nice to connect with your fans this way?

Shawn Richard: My digital release was a big hit, I was super nervous (I am more comfortable performing in person than on screen), but it was great, and we had a lot of interaction!

It wasn’t the way I had planned to have my release party, but it was still great and emotional, nonetheless.

I felt like I connected with my fans more this way, because I got to see what people were saying, and I could go back and read the comments and could just feel so much love! I am so thankful for all the support I get.

Front Porch Music: Over the past couple of years, there has been more pressure for better representation on radio stations, music festivals, and the country industry as a whole the country music industry. Whether it’s gender parity, racial inclusion, and visibility from the LGBT community. What are your thoughts here and what do you think needs to be done to increase representation in the country industry?

Shawn Richard: As a member of the LGBT community, I’ve been watching the industry evolve since I began writing music and I am very hopeful that it will continue to welcome all people of any minority.

Country music tells such true stories and it can resonate with anyone.

I think if there were more events for inclusion within the genre, more support from all artists and managers, equal opportunity in radio play and concert line ups, it would really help break down the conservative stereotype and show that country music does welcome all people.  I do see strides being made however, but there is still much progress to be made.

Front Porch Music: Right now, we’re all stuck at home trying to do our part to stop the spread of the Coronavirus. What are you doing to pass the time while practicing social distancing?

Shawn Richard: Well, the release has kept me occupied most of the time!

I have used this time to write a few more songs.  I’ve reached out to some people to give me their stories to write about to kind of get my followers involved as well. I’ve been planning out the next phase of my music career and considering carefully which songs I want to record on my EP, But mostly just hanging out with my dog and enjoying as much of the outdoors as possible!

Front Porch Music: Sounds like a great time of social-distancing to us! Thanks so much for chatting with us, we can’t wait to hear what’s next for you.
