Before Shawnee Kish was writing chart-worthy country songs, she was a kid doing Shania Twain impressions at local parades in Welland, Ontario, a “job” that turned into birthday parties and festival gigs long before she ever picked up a pen to write her own material.
On this episode, Shawnee talks about writing as a lifeline during a hard adolescence, and how that same honesty still drives her music today. She’s open about the pressure she’s felt over the years to fit a certain mold, and the extra weight that’s come with being a female, indigenous, two-spirit artist in country music, along with how she’s learned to keep showing up as herself anyway.
We also get into her whirlwind year: a Top of the Country finalist spot alongside Morgan Griffiths and Blue Ridge Band, a first-ever CCMA nomination for Alternative Country Album of the Year, and a new single called “Ride the River” landing in late August. She wrote her Top of the Country song, “Ride at Dawn,” in under a week, and not long after headlined her first all-women country festival lineup, an experience she says confirmed exactly why she does this.
Funny enough, this conversation turned out to be three CCMA nominees in one room. We’ll see her again at Lasso and again at the CCMAs this fall.
