What the random collaboration is going on here?
On January 12th, 2018, Carrie Underwood released a new single called The Champion that features rapper Ludacris. This track is being used as the opening song for this year’s Super Bowl, and the music video will debut on Feb 4th during the big game.
The unexpected collaboration aside, this is a really different move musically for Carrie. Her voice, as usual, is spectacular and a total powerhouse, making this song sound anthemic. It’s a bit of a move away from her typical country music sound, but that makes sense – it will appeal to a wider audience for the Super Bowl.
The Champion has a great message to it that’s all about winning, and being a champion (duh).
I am invincible, unbreakable
Unstoppable, unshakeable
They knock me down, I get up again
I am the champion
You’re gonna know my name
You can’t hurt me now
I can’t feel the pain
I was made for this, yeah, I was born to win
I am the champion
Even though it’s a great song, it leaves us wondering if this is a sign of what’s to come from Carrie Underwood. Is she experimenting with the idea of crossing into the pop genre? She’s previously had some success on the pop charts, so it wouldn’t be totally out of left field.
No matter her intentions, this song is clearly resonating with audiences. It premiered at number 1 on the iTunes charts. What a great way for her to start her weekend!
What do you think of the song?
In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
