Canadian country and Americana artist Joey Clarkson has released her song “These Days” as a single from her album titled The Year That Never Was. It’s an incredibly personal single that has quite the story and inspiration behind it.
“These Days” isn’t just a personal song – it’s autobiographical. The entire album is actually a reflection of a tough first year of marriage. For a time that’s supposed to be pure joy and happiness, Joey Clarkson and her new husband found that they would have to experience their first year of marriage in different countries.
“‘These Days’ was the first song I wrote after my visa was declined,” says the Canadian singer/songwriter about her extensive journey to securing a spousal visa to remain in the UK. “It quite literally fell out of me the day after an absolutely soul crushing moment where immigration officials explained I would not be walking out of the office with one in-hand.”
In what must have been an incredibly difficult time, came an incredible album and single. “The drive back to London from the office in Glasgow was a blur for me – luckily, I was the passenger. But the morning after, I woke up with an overwhelming sense of needing to write.” And write she did!
“These Days” is a beautiful song. It’s easy to listen to and the melody makes you long for the warm breeze of the summer. But the message and undertone of the song is much darker than the melody would suggest. The lyrics in the song touches on some themes of depression, anxiety, and confusion – which are all something she and her husband experienced dramatically.
Joey’s voice is so sweet and has a folk-like quality that is reminiscent of Norah Jones. Her voice is soft and beautiful, but also strong and confident.
All is good now with her and husband. They are finally together and releasing this album and single together.

Lyrics to “These Days”
Woke up on the wrong side of the morning
Kinda feels like I could have slept away the afternoon
These days it’s easy to forget who we are
When we’re living like we’re always half a beat behind
Gotta stop playing with re-wind
And take it one step at a time
Until we find our way through these days
These days
Letting go is simple when it’s spoken
But a mouthful when you’re trynna put your words into play
And so I keep them and I’m heavier now cuz they’re weighing me down
I know it’s out of my control
I gotta accept what will unfold
And take it as our story rolls
Till we can cast away these days
These days
I know it’s out of my control
I gotta accept what will unfold
And take it as our story rolls
Till we can cast away these days
These days
In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
