A Review of Aaron Goodvin’s Single “You Are”

Aaron Goodvin’s latest single “You Are” has our ears fluttering and our toes tapping.

While the track is upbeat and sure to have you spinning around the dance floor, the lyrics walk the line of self-deprecation and romance, what a combination!

The lyrics are honest- VERY honest, and exactly what got me hooked on the song. It introduces him as a glass half-empty jerk when he’s mad, with a habit of running his mouth. How charming. As we get to the chorus, the redemption comes from his best decision- finding the love of his life. Of all of the people in the world, he can’t believe this perfect human sees the good in him.

It’s a contemporary sound, mixed with a classic love story of a man who can’t help but believe he’s the luckiest guy in the world, and with a girl who is far out of his league.

The song may start off with recognition of his least favourable qualities, but the beat draws you in as it transitions to an appreciation for the woman he loves, for loving him for who he is- flaws and all. I can’t help but picture Aaron Goodvin singing this song directly to his beautiful wife.

“You Are” was released in September of this year, with the video follow-up released in early October. Goodvin broke into radio airplay with his songs “Woman in Love,” “Miss Me Yet,” and the smash hit “Lonely Drum.”

“You Are” is an excellent follow up to the success of Lonely Drum. While Lonely Drum has raked in a few CCMA’s, “You Are” has the potential to see the same success and keep Goodvin’s momentum going. While the song doesn’t showcase the range of Goodvin’s unique rasp like “Miss Me Yet” and “Woman in Love”, it still stays true the country sound that gets listeners on their feet.

Lyrics to “You Are” by Aaron Goodvin

I’m a real black and whiter
I’m a half-glass-empty negative sider
I’m a jerk when I’m mad
I’m good at running my mouth
But I don’t like to brag about that
Ha, but about that, I ain’t worth it
Lord knows I ain’t perfect

But you are the best decision that I ever made
You are everything to everything I ain’t
You’re one is seven billion
Girl I’ve been near and far
Ain’t nobody like who you are
And I love who you are
‘Cause you know who you are
Can’t believe that you’re mine, all mine
But you are

Sometimes I wonder why you put up with me
I’m in over my head girl I’m out of my league
I’m a hell of a man, I’m hell on you girl
If I could I’d tell the whole world

You are the best decision that I ever made
You are everything to everything I ain’t
You’re one is seven billion
Girl I’ve been near and far
Ain’t nobody like who you are
And I love who you are
‘Cause you know who you are
Can’t believe that you’re mine, all mine
But you are

You are the best decision that I ever made
You are everything to everything I ain’t
You’re one is seven billion
Girl I’ve been near and far
Ain’t nobody like who you are
And I love who you are
‘Cause you know who you are
Can’t believe that you’re mine, all mine
But you are

Can’t believe, can’t believe that you’re mine
But you are
Yeah you are
Yeah you are
Yeah you are
Can’t believe that you’re mine all mine
But you are

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
