Interview With Maddison Krebs

Front Porch – Your new EP is about to be released. It has a really optimistic message – tell us a bit about it, and the inspiration behind the EP.

Maddison Krebs – My EP takes you on a little musical journey, introducing you to my past, present and future. In these songs I speak up about what’s on my heart, as honestly as I can. I wrote a lot and through that discovered things about myself as a human and artist. This EP was somewhat like therapy for me; these songs really helped me through a lot.

FP – There were some really heavy-handed writers on “Real Real Thing” – Jeff Trott and Tony Martin – Did you find that overwhelming, or intimidating at all?

MK – I wrote “Real Real Thing” with my dear friends / co-writers , Jason Afable and Liz Sharpe. They are both great songwriters here in Nashville and I am grateful I got to write that song with them.  This song is a reflection of the great time we have collaborating together. It’s always a room full of laughs and inspiration! It’s been so rewarding seeing people loving the song!

FP – What was the recording process like – do you enjoy recording, or do you prefer to be out on the road and feeding off the energy of a live crowd?

MK – The recording process is very magical. You have a collection of songs you believe in and when you go into the studio, they begin to come to life. I am grateful I got to work alongside such an inspiring person like Jeff Trott. I will cherish the memories I had creating this EP forever! I love the creating and the live show aspect. The start to finish process of creating a song and then seeing someone connect with it in a crowd is so fulfilling.

FP – What inspires you, or gets you in the mood/mindset to write?

MK – I get most of my inspiration through personal experiences. I’m always digging deep to find the clearest way to speak the truth or what’s on my mind. I usually find my best ideas on the drive over to my co-write.  I’m definitely that girl who’s singing at the top of her lungs while driving. In my head it’s my ‘soundproof’ place to belt out and find melodies .. I’m sure lots of people have looked over at me and thought I am some crazy lady!

FP – What are some songs and artists that you are really into right now?

MK – There are lots of artists that I admire, but the first one that comes to mind right now is LP. She is an amazing songwriter. Her song, Girls gone Wild is a favourite of mine.

FP – The country music genre has really evolved in the past few years, and has become much more approachable to the average listener – blending the lines of pop and country, or country and rock. What do you think about that, and what do you say to the people who are critical about this trend?

MK – I believe in great songs. When you look at the biggest hits of all time and wonder why people are still listening to them today , it’s because they are timeless and bend the boundaries of genres. I love music and for myself I always aim to create something that can reach someone at any point in their life. I’m glad genres in general are becoming more blurred and people are making what they love. It excites me that music is becoming an outlet where people can have lots of influences and express themselves fearlessly. The best art is created when there are no boundaries.

FP – From a very young age, you’ve had a clear vision of what you were meant to do. It seems like whatever you put your mind to, you go after wholeheartedly to make sure it happens. What’s next for you – What’s your next goal?

MK – Everyday I’m continuing to grow more as a human and artist. Striving to be the best version of myself and spreading more love has always been my main intention. I hope my message and music continues to grow and can reach more people, wherever they are in their life.

FP – Thanks so much Maddison, we can’t wait to hear what’s next for you!

Canadian country artists Maddion Kreb's self-titled EP

In country music, the Front Porch has long been a place of reflection. A place where you can look at the life you have inside that front door. A place where time almost seems to stand still, where you can get away. It’s also a place where you can go to observe the world as it passes by you. To think about your place out there beyond the driveway.
