Lucas Mason became a notable emerging artist after he took the stage with Zach Bryan in Toronto during the Quittin’ Time tour.

Beginning to find his way in the music industry, Lucas has been playing shows locally, opening for Dom Louis at Toronto’s coveted Horseshoe Tavern.

He’s kicked off 2025 with a slot on Front Porch Music’s Artist To Watch in 2025, his first headline show for his fundraiser “Country For a Cure”, and his debut EP, Almost 18.

Almost 18 Draws On Early Life Growing Up

Almost 18 features four original songs, including three penned by Lucas.

On the release of the EP, Lucas says “With months in the making, it taught me so much about myself. If one year ago today someone told me that on this day I’d release an EP full of songs written on my own, with my brother playing guitar, and 3 other insanely talented guys playing in my band, I probably wouldn’t believe you.”

The track listing features “Burnout”, title track “Almost 18”, previously released “I Should’ve Known”, and “Angsty”.

Collaborators include production by Adam Newcomb (Riley Taylor, Tyler Lorette) and support from Daryl Scott and Honky-Tonk Record Co.

Recorded in a barn, Lucas is proud of the internal reflection that led him to three self-written songs, digging in further when it comes to songwriting, and the lessons he’s learned over the first eighteen years of his life.

It’s safe to say, the last year has already been a whirlwind for Lucas, and he’s only getting started.

Country For A Cure: Inspired By Lucas’ Grandfather And His Battle With Cancer

Front Porch: This is an incredible moment for you, headlining your first show and supporting such an important cause. How did you come up with the idea to combine your headliner debut with a fundraiser?

Lucas: I first got the idea for this fundraiser after writing a song for my Papa (my grandfather), who passed away from cancer. He was someone who loved music and would have loved to see my journey and been a big supporter. Cancer is something that affects almost every family and I love the fact that the Rankin Cancer Run uses funds to support cancer care directly in the Niagara Region where my Papa received his care and where my family lives. Because this is a cause so close to my heart, and my headlining debut would have been something my Papa would have been so proud of, it seemed like a natural fit to combine the two. I have even scheduled it for the week of what would have been his 81st birthday, on January 15th.

FP: The dedication to your grandfather makes it deeply personal. Can you share a bit about how he inspired you and how his memory has shaped this event?

Lucas: My Papa and I were very close. He loved music and he had a big personality. He wasn’t afraid to be himself and to live life the way that he wanted. I like to think that I have a bit of him in me and I want to make him proud.

FP: How can supporters get involved to help make a difference through this charity event?

Lucas: People who want to support this event can buy tickets for my concert through the link in my bio and posts. There is also an option for those who can’t make the concert but want to support the Rankin Cancer Run through a donation.

FP: What can you tell us about your opening acts – Andy Colonico and Hailey McNeil?

Lucas: Andy Colonico is a local singer-songwriter from Welland, Ontario. Andy is both the frontman of the rock band, Revive the Rose and a solo country artist, who is enjoying much success with his recent EP release. Andy has been honoured as “Artist of the Month” by the Country Music Association of Ontario in August of this year.  Being involved in this cause means a lot to Andy, as cancer has affected his family as well.

Haley McNeil is an up-and-coming singer-songwriter originally from Teeswater, Ontario. Haley’s style blends contemporary country with classic southern rock. Haley and I first met this summer at the North of Nowhere Music Festival where she blew the judges away and won the Emerging Artist contest. Raising awareness and funds for cancer care is also a cause near and dear to Haley’s heart.
