Mallory Johnson Is “over the party” in Bold, Honest, Sophomore Album

Mallory Johnson's album Over The Party

Mallory Johnson has been hard at work over the last couple years on her sophomore album; and what can I say, over the party is officially out, and it’s a stunning evolution of her artistry.

The follow-up to her 2022 debut Surprise Party (which featured the Top 40 hit “Married”), over the party trades glitter and grit for the silence and aftermath.

The Party’s Not Over, But Mallory’s ‘over the party’

“This record is somewhat an extension or b-side — maybe even an evil stepsister — to Surprise Party,” Mallory shares. “It’s an uncensored reveal of… well… when the party’s over. This isn’t to say that all of the songs are dark and dreary, but the common thread through the track list are stories of departure, change and growth. It’s definitely more uncomfortably honest than its sparkly predecessor.”

Produced by Andrew Petroff (Sheryl Crow, Meg McRee), the album dives into raw emotions and an alt-Americana lane, showcasing a deeper, moodier take on Mallory’s signature sound.

Featuring singles “f*ck that”, “suitcase,” and “the circus”, the album is already receiving lots of success, earning Mallory 2025 ECMA nominations for Country Recording and Fans’ Choice Entertainer of the Year.

Getting Dark And Honest

While Surprise Party was full of sparkle, over the party lingers in the emotional aftermath, a collection of dark, raw emotions that uncover what’s really behind the ‘party’.

The title track, “over the party” actually kicks off the album with a lighter, acoustic intro to the themes she dives into further. “over the party” is a personal favourite, along with “suitcase” and “how you leave”.

Mallory’s writing cuts deeper here, bending americana and country into her own alternative sound. She has a way of communicating a story by seamlessly pairing the abstract with literal. The production style really gives the stories in this album a dark, edgy fire, which melds nicely with her generally soft tone.

With this release, Mallory Johnson proves she’s not just growing as an artist, she’s really etching her name as a poignant songwriter.
